If you are an office manager whose job it is to order office furniture, you might have come across an order for a right or left return desk. If you are unfamiliar with the terminology, don’t worry, it’s pretty simple. The term return refers to the old style manual typewriters used years ago, which had what is called a return carriage. Basically, when you finished typing, you would hear a “ding” and then you would hit the return carriage to begin typing on the next line. A left turn desk for example, would be the left wing portion of an L-shaped desk and if it is a right return desk, the wing would on the right to accommodate either left or right carriage returns on the old typewriters. For whatever reason, the terminology has stayed the same.
